A fire separation is only as strong as its weakest penetration. Cables, pipes, and ducts that pass through a fire-resistant wall or floor must therefore be sealed with a tested system that maintains the fire resistance (WBDBO) of the separation. This article explains which systems are available, which standards apply, and which factors determine the price.

What sealing systems are available?

The right choice depends on the type of penetration, the wall or floor construction, the required EI class, and whether more penetrations will be added in the future.

What do the standards mean?

NEN-EN 1366-3 is the European test standard for penetrations; NEN-EN 1366-4 for linear joint seals. Based on that test, a system receives a classification in accordance with NEN-EN 13501-2, expressed as EI + time:

  • E (integrity): the seal does not allow flames or hot gases through.
  • I (insulation): the non-fire side does not become too hot (average max. 140 °C above starting temperature).
  • For example EI 60: 60 minutes of both integrity and insulation.

In the Netherlands, NEN 6069 how that European classification relates to the national requirement, and determines NEN 6068 the WBDBO of the entire separation.

Registration is part of the requirement

Certification applies to the combination of product and application. That is why every seal must be recorded: location on drawing, system, EI class, installation date, and photo. Without registration, you cannot demonstrate during an inspection that the penetration was installed in accordance with the valid classification – and a new cable added through it later is not traceable.

What determines the cost?

  • Type and number of penetrations. Sealing a single cable is cheaper than a mixed opening with mortar and collars.
  • Structure. Masonry wall, plasterboard wall, or concrete floor – each requires a different system.
  • Accessibility. Penetrations above a suspended ceiling, in a tight shaft, or at height require more labor.
  • Volume. A catch-up project with hundreds of penetrations has a much lower unit price than individual reports.
  • Documentation. With us, registration in the logbook is included in the price as standard.

Concrete amounts vary too much per situation to mention here. After a brief survey, you will receive a quote per penetration or per opening, with no surprises on final billing.

No. Doing so voids the certification. The penetration must be resealed and re-registered in accordance with a tested system.
