Costs

What do fire-resistant doors cost?

The cost of a fire-resistant door depends on the size, the classification (30 or 60 minutes, with or without smoke resistance), the hardware, the finish, and whether the frame is replaced or reused. Standard interior doors are more affordable than wide or double doors and glass doors. Adjusting or refurbishing existing doors is often a fraction of the replacement price.

Common mistakes

Adjusting the closer so the door no longer latches fully shut; a fire door that doesn't close properly doesn't work.
Using gap retainers or wedges that keep the door permanently open.
Installing grilles or cat flaps in a fire door yourself, which voids the classification.

Questions about fire-resistant doors

Does a fire-resistant door also need to be smoke-resistant?

For most escape routes, yes: alongside fire resistance, smoke resistance (Sm) is also required, because smoke poses the greatest danger to people escaping. This is assessed per situation.

Can an existing frame be reused?

Only if the frame itself also meets the requirements or can be made suitable. This is assessed during the inspection.
